Chandigarh: In a recent development, prominent farmer leaders Sarwan Singh Pandher and Jagjit Singh Dallewal met with the Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) to request a fair and impartial investigation into the alleged slapping of Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut by Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) constable Kulwinder Kaur at Chandigarh Airport. The incident, which occurred on Thursday, has garnered significant media attention and public scrutiny.
The Incident
The altercation reportedly took place during a routine security check at the airport. It is alleged that the CISF constable slapped Kangana Ranaut, leading to an immediate backlash. The constable has since been suspended pending investigation.
Farmer Leaders' Stance
Jagjit Singh Dallewal, addressing the media after the meeting with the DGP, emphasized the need for a fair probe. "We believe that nothing untoward happened; it was merely related to a security check and should not be blown out of proportion into a Hindu-Sikh issue," Dallewal stated. He further added, "We demanded to meet the constable and her family to ensure their side of the story is also heard. The DGP has assured us that a free and fair investigation will be conducted."
Sarwan Singh Pandher echoed Dallewal's sentiments, stressing the importance of maintaining the dignity of those in uniform. He also highlighted the allegations that the dispute stemmed from Ranaut's purse and mobile phone during the security check. "The question now is whether Kangana cooperated with the security procedures and respected the constable's duties," Pandher noted.
Official Statements and Reactions
CISF DIG Vinay Kajla was quoted as saying that Kulwinder was "apologetic" about her "emotional outburst"—she allegedly confronted Kangana over her remarks about women's participation in the farm agitation. However, there has been no official word from the force on this matter.
Sources indicated that CISF would take action based on the outcome of the departmental inquiry against the constable. Notably, Kulwinder's husband, also a CISF employee, is attached to the dog squad and posted at the same location.
Support for the Constable
Among those who came out in support of the suspended constable was 82-year-old farm activist Mohinder Kaur, who had previously filed a defamation suit against Kangana for her remarks on the farm protest. "Kangana has no sense of how to speak. Since she has been elected as an MP, she should be polite. She tried to brand Punjabis as extremists. She used derogatory words for us," the octogenarian said.
Kangana, now an MP from Mandi in Himachal, had posted on X a picture of Mohinder as "dadi of Shaheen Bagh of Delhi" and alleged that "such women" would turn up at a protest site for Rs 100.
Investigative Actions
Mohali police are actively scanning footage from CCTV cameras at the terminal to verify Ranaut's allegations. "Action per the complaint filed by CISF has been taken. Further action is in process," said Mohali SSP Sandeep Garg. Kulwinder Kaur has been booked under bailable sections 323 and 341 of IPC.
Political Reactions
Farmer leaders also praised Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar for his balanced response to the incident. "The statement of Sunil Jakhar should be praised; he played the role of a true Punjabi without succumbing to any pressure," Dallewal remarked.
The meeting between the farmer leaders and the Punjab DGP underscores the importance of a balanced and thorough investigation into the incident. Both parties have called for calm and for the situation to be viewed in light of all the facts. The assurance from the DGP to conduct a fair probe is a step towards addressing the concerns raised by various stakeholders.
As the investigation progresses, it remains critical to ensure that justice is served impartially, considering the perspectives of both Kangana Ranaut and the CISF constable. This incident highlights the broader issues of respect and cooperation between the public and security personnel, as well as the sensitivities surrounding the farmers' protests.
